My baby is 5 months old now...
I'm thinking it's time to put him in the room I decorated for him almost a year ago.
Problem is that he has a 2 year old brother he has to share the room with and I'm worried that they will be waking each other up throughout the night and I really like to sleep... I also like happy, well-rested little boys... I'm nervous.
So, I am asking for advice.
I know I'm not the first person to put a baby in a room with a toddler. Any tips/ tricks?
Please.
amazingly, I had almost no problems when I put Asher and Aeden together...I was worried, let me tell you. Routine, whatever it is, seemed to help us, and then when Asher would wake up at night, I would go up to check on him quickly so he didn't get too loud for too long, but it hasn't been too big of a deal. Hope the same goes for you!
ReplyDeleteI have the same thing with my girls. When my youngest was born last year she was going to have to share a room w/ her 2 yrd old sister. We ended up waiting till she was 8 mos before we moved Ella to her room and Halle wanted to sleep in her 6yr old brothers room. He didn't mind and actually loves her being in there w/ him. All of Halle's things are still in the girl's room but she just sleeps in one of her brothers beds (he has 2) at night. It works out amazingly well and they all sleep thru the night. When Ella is a bit older (and less prone to waking easily) we'll move Halle back in for bedtime. This works for us now! Good luck finding a way that works for you.
ReplyDeleteI need advise on how to get those 5 month olds to sleep through the night... yawn!!
ReplyDeleteI don't know how you'll manage 2 babies in one room, but the room itself looks adorable! what a great color palette!!! GOOD LUCK ;)
ReplyDeletemy son was three when my daughter was born...after several months, we moved them into the (very small) room together...we have only a few issues here and there...i think the sooner they share the better...and like tiffany said, going in quickly at first is helpful...so that as you get closer to letting the baby soothe him/herself to self...the older sibling is used to it and usually sleeps right through it ...it was the same thing my mom did when my younger brother moved into my room as a child...best wishes...oh and i would put their beds on opposite sides of the room...baby's bed closer to the door :)
ReplyDeleteI think you won't have too much of a problem getting them to sleep in the same room. They're both really young, so they'll probably get used to it faster. I moved my girls together when they were 4 and 2, my 4 year old still wakes up my 2 year old ALL the time.
ReplyDeleteI have no advice since I only have one, but has to say the room is adorable! Great job and good luck.
ReplyDeleteMy thinking is along the same lines as Hana. I'd try to have the older siblings share and let the baby have his own room (which is absolutely adorable) until he's older. I have a 2 year old boy and he is still in his own room while the older siblings all share. Even if it is just where they sleep and not a complete move. Maybe I'll move him in with his older brother when he is 3 or so. They have different bed times but the youngest goes to sleep and the oldest sneaks in later. It has worked in the past for us.
ReplyDeleteKenzie was 3 when we moved Hannah into her room. I don't know if I could have handled it earlier. Even at 3 we had to give it at least 3 days before Kenzie started sleeping through Hannah's noises and Hannah got used to Kenzie in there. Good luck!
ReplyDeleteWhat child wouldn't sleep soundly in that room? It's so cute!
ReplyDeleteI moved my kids to the same room when they were 3 months & 2 years old. I put a white noise machine closer to my 2 year old's bed so that he got the louder portion of it. They woke each other up a little at first but got over it pretty quick. They still share a room & they are almost 3 & 15 months. Good luck. You can email me if you have any questions. nreyn1@amfam.com Love the blog!!!!
ReplyDeleteI think it may take a couple of nights for them to get used to it, but I think it will go smoother than you think. If not, a shot a whiskey may do the trick! LOL
ReplyDeleteMy 3 1/2 yr old and 9 month old share a room together right now! Sometimes they wake each other up but it's been pretty good generally. I just say try it out...what's a few nights or a week? If it works, stick with it...and I'm thinking it will! Good luck :D
ReplyDeleteI have a 3 year old and an 8 month old. The 8 month old moved out of our room and into the 3 year old's room about a month ago. The first few nights the 3 year old was weird about it, but he has been fine ever since. I tried three ways.... putting the baby to bed/nap first, then the 3 year old; then vice versa; then both at the same time. For us, any of the three work fine. It's easier for them to go down for naps at the same time, but then at night the baby goes to bed first since he gets tired faster! Good luck, it'll be fine!
ReplyDeleteMy first two shared a room. No problems. Now my second two share a room. Again, no problems. They actually nap through each other's noise too if one isn't tired enough to go right to sleep or wake up.
ReplyDeleteFunny thing, when we only had the first two, nap time was at 3:00 to 5:00 or 6:00 and bedtime was at 9:00. Now we have all four from 2nd grade to a 17 month old in bed by 7:30. Never thought 7:30 bedtime would even be possible before having number 3 and 4. Funny how things change.
Anyway, I can almost guarantee you won't have problems sleeping them together in the same room.
Happened to stumble across your blog-maybe it was fate, lol. I have two daughters; the youngest was born 2 weeks before the oldest's 2nd birthday. They have always been in the same bedroom (after the first two weeks or so...). I have never experienced any problem with them keeping eachother awake until I put them in the same bed. Even then, after about 5 days of sticking to our guns, they adjusted. As long as they were seperated, there was never a problem! I must say, tho, I am a stickler for ROUTINE. I have been from the very beginning. My mother raised me that way. I never even thought to question her routine until I was mid-elementary school and attending slumber parties. I attribute my (and my mother's) success to sincerely following a routine. Best of luck, you never know until you try! It's worth it :)
ReplyDeleteMy two (now 4 1/2 & 2) have shared a room for a while. My only suggestions are to stick to a routine and stagger bedtimes by a little bit. Stick with it, it's totally worth it!
ReplyDeleteNot a clue on the sharing a room thing, but the room is gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteThe room is adorable. I am so glad you asked this question because i have a 2.5yr old and a baby due in Aug and they will be sharing. My older two have never shared so I have been wondering how it will all work out!
ReplyDeleteI didn't read any of the other advice you got, so this may be a repeat. My boys are 13.5 months apart (ACK!) When the younger one was 4 months old we moved him into the same room with the older one. My younger son was totally sleeping through the night by the point. I actually had very little problems with the transition. My main advice is just do it. They (which means you too) might have a few rough nights at first, but at least for us it was all smooth quickly.
ReplyDeletehaven't experienced it with two of different ages, but i have 16 month old twins who have always shared a room, and my biggest tip is to go in right away when one wakes up. the other will usually keep sleeping if i go in and get the awakened one right away, but if i delay, then they're both awake and it's a disaster. good luck!!
ReplyDeleteFirst off I LUFF that room. It is absolutely adorable. Do you mind me asking where you got those cute frames?
ReplyDelete2nd, I had the same problem with my 2 boys a while back-- but I just stuck 'em together and somehow it all turned out okay.
I've got all 3 of my kids in the same room. They are ages *almost 4*, 2, and 8 months. When we had #2...we just added her to the room when she was born. Same with #3, although I think she was the one to stay in our room the longest...about a week. Call me crazy, but my kids were just too loud of sleepers for me to have them in my room, and they have always done just fine in their cribs from the get-go.
ReplyDeleteBedtime sometimes gets crazy (especially now that the daylight is longer), but we just stagger bedtimes. Mostly with my 2 year old, because she's the one that needs to fall asleep first...then I can put my 4 yr old and baby to bed at the same time...about 20 min. later. It has worked really well for us, and they don't really wake each other up. The baby actually sleeps through most anything the best out of all 3.
I just came across your blog the other day and I LOVE how you did your little boys room. I have been looking for a cute idea for both of my boys rooms! You did a great job and I love the colors!! I'm going to try and do something similar!!
ReplyDeleteI LOVE this room! How adorable. And I love the "BOYS" letters. I hope to soon move my two boys together too, so thanks for such a good guestion!
